A gastropod Cronia margariticola is stealing bivalve prey Hormomya mutabilis from another gastropod Morula musiva in a tide pool. This video picture was taken from above the water surface, and is being played at a speed of about 10 times the actual speed. When Cronia margariticola steals prey from another animal, it presses its body or shell against the opponent or nudges the opponent with the mouth. In the video picture, C. margariticola is pressing its shell against the opponent, Morula musiva. Cronia margariticola appears to perceive the presence of prey through the ŽÒsmellŽÓ leaking out of the prey. This species tends to eat dead organisms, and its ability to detect them through smell appears to be relatively high as compared to that of the other members of the family Muricidae.
