Eggs of the crab Pugettia quadridens quadridens are hatching into tiny larvae called "zoea". Eggs are attached to the inner surface of the female's abdomen (often called as an apron). Larvae are seen as whitish grains in the video picture. Larvae quickly swim out of the apron as the female fans it back and forth. Larvae are capable of active swimming and they will disperse into the ocean right after hatching. Hatching begins in the evening and continues till night. Once all eggs are hatched, females lay another batch of eggs and carry them under their aprons.
