We put male and female Pugettia quadridens quadridens together in the laboratory and filmed their copulatory behavior. The sequence of courtship and copulation were as follows (male on the left and female on the right in the view). Either male or female approaches the other _ male holds female from behind _ male moves to the abdominal side of female _ male lies on his back and crawls under female _ female opens her abdomen _ male inserts his genitalia into female's genital pore (5-20min) _ male crawls out from under female and holds female from behind (post-copulatory mate guarding). A male frequently shakes his body right after he takes hold of a female or when he is rejected by a female while trying to copulate. This behavior may entice a female into copulation. Sperm from a single mating can fertilize three batches of eggs; hence, females mate only as needed. This video picture shows a portion of the courtship sequence: from the time when the male crawled under the female to the time when the female became ready for copulation.
