The jumping spider Silerella vittata is thought to feed on ants. Although we often see this spider near a line of ants, we seldom see it actually feeding on ants. In this video picture, Silerella vittata is robbing the ants Pristomyrmex pungens of their eggs and pupae. The spider is not feeding on adult ants. Instead, it is only stealing eggs and pupae. The spider seems to sit and wait for the eggs and pupae, which are to be carried by the adult ants from time to time. The ant species, P. pungens, does not establish permanent nests but relocates its colonies frequently. Thus, if the spider sits ant waits near a line of ants, the chance of encounter eggs and pupae may be quite high.
