School recognition of the catfish
The catfish, Plotosus lineatus, forms a dense ball shaped school soon after hatching. It is known that even when two schools happen to be mixed, original two schools are reformed. Here, we observed in the aquarium whether original schools are reformed after mixing of two schools.
Video: The two schools encountered and mixed; individuals tried to recognize their own schools. The two schools were gradually reformed, and the original schools were reformed in 2min. A few individuals were however joined in the school different from the original school, indicating that completely original school was not reformed. This may happen in the field. In addition, we observed the interesting case; after the mixing, the mixed school remained one school. In other words, two schools fused to new one school. These results suggest that there is any combination on the interaction between schools.
