In the filefish Rudarius ercodes, females usually care for eggs. When a parental female was experimentally removed, a tagged male came to care for the eggs. Another male then came to eat the eggs and the two males began to fight. The males displayed each other by showing black nuptial coloration as well as bending the caudal peduncle upward and vibrating it vigorously 2-3 times per minute. After a long period of displays, the tagged individual repelled the intruder and defended the eggs.
