While driving, we saw a Japanese serow climbing up a cliff along a prefectural highway. As we approached, the serow stopped at a distance of about 20 m and stared at us for about 10 minutes. It then ran farther up the cliff.
The Japanese serow is endemic to Japan and is designated as a special national treasure. Its body size indicates that this individual probably is mature; however, its sex is unknown because both males and females of this species have a pair of short horns on the head. (translated by Asoh)
