Anodonta woodiana is a large fresh-water bivalve whose shell length reaches over 15 cm. In the video, a Japanese bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus kurumeus) is laying eggs inside of the bivalve. As soon as eggs are laid, they are spit out of the bivalve. Soon after the start of the video and at 15 seconds from the start, eggs are spit out and eaten by the female fish. The close-up of the egg spitting is shown in the 3rd cut. After eggs are deposited, the bivalve opens and closes the shells several times, presumably because it senses the presence of foreign objects. (See a separate video ¡ÆSpawning in a Japanese bitterling Rhodeus ocellatus kurumeus¡Ç for the detailed description in the spawning of the bitterling.)
