Male Sepioteuthis lessoniana used multiple mating behaviors. Male competition over females frequently occurred during the breeding period, and the outcome of most fights depended on the relative body size. Larger males formed a pair and transferred spermatophores into the female mantle cavity during the egg-laying period (Pattern 1). In contrast, smaller males adopted alternative mating tactics without pair formation and attached spermatophores around the female buccal area (Pattern 2).
