It has been reported that Gastropods of the genus Batillaria feed on organic matters contained in the mud of intertidal flats. It was confirmed, however, that this gastropod Batillaria zonalis feeds on particles suspended in the water. In the picture, chlorella was added to the sea water. Steps of suspension feeding in this species are as follows. 1) draw in clumps of chlorella into a siphon, 2) expel greenish, string-like material, which is chlorella made into a string with mucus, from the food groove, and 3) turn the head and ingest the greenish string. Please pay close attention to each of the steps. The file size of picture is 10M, but one with 100M is also available.
