This unedited video shows decorating behaviour of an orb-weaver, Cyclosa argenteoalba (Araneidae), extracted from the speed-up edited video showing the spider manipulated by a parasitoid larva, Reclinervellus nielseni, to change the intrinsic orb web into a simple and durable cocoon web (http://www.momo-p.com/showdetail-e.php?movieid=momo130617rn01b&flv=1).
The spider shows a specific behaviour flapping its fourth legs onto the radii to spray fibrous thread decorations in the course of web manipulation caused by its parasitoid. This behaviour and resulting decoration are also shown in the resting web that unparasitised spider builds before moulting, suggesting that the parasitoid takes advantage of preprogrammed web-building behaviours for its cocoon protection.
