Philippine long-tailed macaque throwing and striking the coconut against the cement steps of a pathway until cracking it open.

Below is the abstract from the article containing this video:

In this report, we describe an innovative extractive foraging behavior exhibited by an adult long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) in the southern Philippines. The macaque, named as “Flattops,” is a member of a free-ranging, synanthropic troop in New Israel, Makilala, North Cotabato, Philippines. We opportunistically observed Flattops cracking open a coconut (Cocos nucifera) by performing 55 underhand vertical throws, striking the coconut against the ground and cement steps along a pathway, before successfully consuming its edible parts. Notably, we did not encounter other macaques in the troops performing the same method of cracking the coconuts. Although our observation represents a single instance and cannot account for the development and motivations behind the documented behavior, it suggests that this innovative foraging technique may indicate a higher level of problem-solving ability and may be unique to Flattops. It also highlights individual variation in the development of foraging strategies within the troop. Future research may explore the prevalence of innovative foraging behaviors, their efficiency compared to other techniques, and their possible transmission among troop members.
