The messmate pipefish Corythoichthys haematopterus is a member of the family Syngnathidae. Males of all syngnathids have a brood pouch in which fertilized eggs are protected until hatching.
This video picture shows spawning behavior and male egg-brooding behavior in C. haematopterus. Just before spawning, a mating pair leave the bottom. The male and female swim alongside and bring their genital regions into close contact with each other. Eggs are laid and fertilized in the male's brood pouch while the pair swim alongside in a half-circle trajectory, and the spawned eggs remain attached to the pouch. The pair then perform a "wiggle dance", which generally lasts about 2 minutes. The wiggle dance is thought to facilitate firm attachment of eggs to the brood pouch. The video picture covers up to halfway through a wiggle dance. (trancelated by Asoh)
