Seen from above the water surface of a tide pool, the goby Bathygobius fuscus has cryptic coloration that merge well into the surroundings. With a closer attention, however, you can see it feeding actively during low tides. It picks on anything that looks like food. If you dive into the water and look at the fish from the side, you can see the lateral body surface of the fish is rather brightly colored — white ground color with many spots. This coloration may function to advertise social status of each goby. Individuals of this species were seen to chase one another and hence they might be territorial. (translated by Asoh)
