Frequently seeing striped eel catfish form groups called "Gonzui-dama," we, recreational divers, tend to think them as being pals. But once it comes down to a matter of reproduction, they fight vigorously. There was a female with an extended abdomen beside the competing males. The males backed slightly from time to time. Is this a competitive display to show their flank to the opponent? The catfish is known to have a venomous dorsal spine but they do not seem to use it as a weapon.
