Two juvenile chimpanzees are playing.
Goodall (1989) divided play into lone play and social play. Further, she divided lone play into 4 categories, (a) locomotor play, or van Hooff's (1973) Gymnastics, (b) nest play, (c) object play, and (d) self play. She added that, ¡ÈThere is a facial expression connected with play, the play face, a type of locomotion that is seen only in the play context, the play walk, and a vocalization, laughing.¡É Goodall (1989) listed as elements of each play type as follows: (a) locomotor play: <dangle>, <gambol>, <leap>,<swing>,<pirouette>, and <somersault>. (b) nest play: <make a bed>, <leap>, and <climb>. (c) object play: <pick up>, <throw>, <rub>, <rotate object with one's feet>, <drag>, <drape>, <flail>, and <move-away>.(d) self play: <grab>, <dangle>, <slap>, and <tickle>. Goodall's social play included <bite>, <butt>, <chase>, <drag>, <finger wrestle>, <heel kick>, <kick>, <kick back>, <pinch>, <play-walk>, <rub>, <spar>, <tickle>, <wrestle>, etc.
