Once ready for spawning, a female three-spined stickleback actively courts a nest-guarding male.
A large fish in the first cut is a female ready to spawn. Compare its large, distended belly with the belly of a female at the back.
In the second cut, a female ready to spawn is at the right of the screen. As a territorial male approaches the female, the female moves toward the male and sticks out its large belly toward the male. This territorial male probably was not ready to spawn because it did not respond to the female courtship.
