The three-spined stickleback reproduces in April and May at Hongan-shimizu, Itoyo-cho, Ohno-city, Fukui Prefecture. Male three-spined sticklebacks develop nuptial coloration during the reproductive season: the area from the snout, to the opercula, and to the abdomen turns into red whereas the sides of the body turn into blue.
