We can see many individuals of the dragonfly Pantala flavescens in almost all parts of Japan (except in the northern Japan). Fertilized eggs develop into adults within a month, and adults fly northward from their birth places. In every spring, starting with individuals born in the southern Japan, a large number of dragonflies migrate northward and spread all over Japan. Both adults and larvae of this species, however, are susceptible to the cold weather, and they die during winter in many places. The northward migration of southern populations brings dragonflies back to these places in the following spring. (translated by Asoh)
