On my way to work, I saw a ¡ÆNorthern Goshawk¡Ç catching a Rock Dove in the Fudoh-bashi Park along the Ochiai River, in Higashi-kurume City, Tokyo. It was around eight o¡Çclock in the morning. The hawk pinned down the dove with the legs, and pecking the dove at the breast. Although the dove struggled, raising its head, the hawk kept a tight hold on the dove and did not let it go. I was watching from a far distance first, but slowly approached the hawk till I am only 3-4 m away. The hawk did not try to escape; rather, it stared at me and kept eating.
I filmed the scene with my digital camera (Optio s5z). The park is wide enough for football games, but has some houses around and is far away from mountains. It was surprising that I was able to see the hawk in a close distance. Craws were flying around the hawk as if they were trying to chase it away. (translated by Asoh)
