Among dragonflies, there are some, like Anotogaster sieboldii males, that have a feature of regarding all that rotate or flutter as females. Synictinogomphus clavatus males seem to have such a feature, and they regarded the rotating dummy as a conspecific female, and tried to copulate with it.
Considering this, the behaviour of chasing between males of such dragonflies may not be regarded as the defence against rival males, and they might regard rivals as females.
However, in the most of females, such reaction have not been sighted, and the sex recognition seems to be surely established among them.
