In male-male contests in the hermit crab Pagurus middendorffii, both contestants (i.e. owner and intruder) used the major chelipeds with flicking and/or grappling during the escalated fighting. Although major cheliped of the owner did not push back the intruder, the intruder seemed to be prevented from approaching the pair by the major cheliped.
