We discovered an orb web weaver Cyclosa argenteoalba (Araneidae) constructs a simple resting web before its moulting. The spider retrieves the spiral for capturing and weaves reduced numbers of radii with frame threads kept unmodified. The radii in the resting web are decorated with conspicuous fibrous threads.
Because the resting web totally without spiral has no intention of predation, the decorations are thought to advertise the presence of the web to deter potential flying web-destroyers from bumping into the web.
Although I failed to record entire sequence of resting web construction, I succeeded in recording the spider spraying fibrous threads onto radii in an irregular Y-shaped simple web (probably a kind of resting web). The spider repeatedly flapped its fourth legs to spray the fibrous threads onto radii and then shed its skin on one of the radii somewhat away from the hub.
