Second calendar-year female Crested Honey Buzzard in Morioka Zoological Park ZOOMO
calling in response to the approaching zoo staff.
Rattling calls immediately transformed into likely begging calls
The combination of these types of calls were repeated four times
with variable numbers of notes in rattling calls.
Essentially the same type of vocalization has been recorded in a YouTube video
of a wild individual (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbmxHo19Hr4).
The video was originally published at https://twitter.com/moriokazoo/status/1445679864623755265.
Uploaded here for an easy referencing to this type of vocalization
and for preservation of the video.
Uploaded by permission of the zoo.
The bird in Morioka Zoological Park ZOOMO was
rescued on 18 July 2019. It was a nestling still with white
feathers and was supposed to have fallen from nest.
The bird was found to drop from a flying raptor
bringing it. There were very little wounds in the body
of the nestling and the raptor was supposed to be
its parent trying to bring back the fallen nestling.

The age of the nestling was estimated to be 15 days
and its weight was 600 g. This bird was once released to
the wild on 5 September 2019, but was captured again
since it did not follow wild individuals on migration and
was transferred to the zoo (Iwate Wildlife Center 2019).
The female sex was firstly suspected
by the heavy body weight (1500 g) in August 2020.
The color of the iris had already become yellowish
on a photo taken on 19 September 2020.
This sex identification is consistent with the current
yellow color of the iris (see e.g., Forsman 2016).
DNA gender determination has not yet been conducted.
This bird is not sexually mature
and has not laid eggs at least up to the 2021 season.
We identified this bird to be a second calendar year
female bird at the time of the voice recording and
experiment to playbacks.
