Respiration of a caddisfly larva in a portable case.
The larva can be seen through the case because of the case build of clear quartz.
Inside the case the larva makes undulating movements of the abdomen, causing water to move through the case from front to rear.
This can move large volumes of water over the abdomen with much less energy than would be required if ventilation were due to simple motion-induced turbulance alone (Ross 1967;Wiley & Kohler 1984).
